The Kenyan was making her third Grand Slam appearance after playing at the Australian Open and Roland Garros.

Kenya’s tennis poster girl Angella Okutoyi will not be making any significant headway on her debut at the prestigious Wimbledon Grand Slam tournament as she was knocked out in the very first round of the competition after losing her Junior Girls match against Canada’s Mia Kupres on Saturday.

Playing her third Junior Grand Slam tournament of the year after featuring at the Australian Open and the Roland Garros, the 2021 African Junior Champion could not replicate her previous form where she successfully navigated the opening round in the first two Grand Slams as she succumbed to a 6-3, 6-2 straight sets defeat against Kupres in Round 1.

Okutoyi’s preparation for the Wimbledon Championships had been rocked by illness just days leading to her match against Kupres. As part of her efforts to get ready, the 18 year old was supposed to play two build up tournaments before her bow at Wimbledon – J1 Nottingham and J1 Roehampton.

She managed to play in Nottingham where she was eliminated in the third round but a bout of illness forced her to withdraw from the tournament in Roehampton played from 26 June to 1 July.

The teenager however managed to recover just in time for the start of Wimbledon but her presence was not enough to earn her a second round as she went down against Kupres.

In the French Open, Okutoyi, who ended Kenya’s 16 year wait for a player to feature in a Grand Slam tournament when she played at the Australian Open, was knocked out in the second round. The teenager made it to the third round in Australia where she made her first ever Grand Slam appearance.
